Marquette freshman Duane Wilson to redshirt entire season

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

Marquette could use backcourt reinforcements as Big East play gets underway next week -- but the Golden Eagles won't be relying on Duane Wilson.

Head coach Buzz Williams announced Friday that Wilson would be redshirting the entire 2013-14 season.

“After thorough conversations with Duane and his family, we have decided it's best for his career that he redshirt this year,” Williams said in a statement.

Wilson, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard, hasn't played this season after suffering a stress fracture in his left leg back in September. He recently started practicing, leading some to think Wilson could return sooner than unexpected. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, his return will now not happen until next season.

Marquette has struggled this season, starting 7-5 heading into a home game with Samford on Saturday. None of the losses have been bad, per se, but outside a win over George Washington, the Golden Eagles' non-conference resume is lacking.

Wilson was a top-60 recruit in the class of 2013, and his ability to get into the lane and create plays for himself and teammates would have provided a major boost to this year's team. Williams has options on the perimeter, but none brings the playmaking ability of someone like Wilson. JaJuan Johnson, another freshman, could bring some perimeter pop -- if he got consistent playing time. He has five games of nine or more points, and seven games where he hasn't scored.
