CBSSports.com Player of the Week: Iowa State's DeAndre Kane

DeAndre Kane was dismissed from a Conference USA program last April, and now he's one of the Big 12's best guards. So it's wild how much things can change in eight months, isn't it? And is anybody better at giving -- and benefitting from -- second chances than Fred Hoiberg?

The Iowa State icon and fourth-year head coach of the Cyclones has made the NCAA tournament in each of the past two seasons with transfers like Royce White, Will Clyburn, Chris Allen and Korie Lucious. Now Hoiberg is on his way to a third straight appearance in the Field of 68 thanks, in part, to DeAndre Kane -- a transfer from Marshall who is this week's CBSSports.com National Player of the Week.

"DeAndre did a great job getting to spots and making the right play," Hoiberg said after Kane led the Cyclones to a 70-66 win over Boise State in the title game of the Diamond Head Classic, after which Hoiberg explained how his players "do a great job of sharing the ball and being unselfish and understanding who's got the best mismatch out there on the floor."

Turns out, that's 100 percent true.

Proof is how Kane was also named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday, and that he's already the fifth different Iowa State player to take that award this season. It's the first time in history that the same school has had five different players win the Big 12 Player of the Week award in the same season, and Iowa State has done it before January. That's remarkable. And, in fairness, this CBSSports.com National Player of the Week award could've just as easily gone to Iowa State's Melvin Ejim or Georges Niang, both of whom were also good in wins over Akron and Boise State. But the pick is Kane because he averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in those two wins while making 15-of-29 shots from the field and 4-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc. He's a big reason why Iowa State is 11-0, ranked 11th in the Top 25 (and one) and suddenly one of the nation's most interesting programs.
