It was a week ago that Michigan announced Mitch McGary's upcoming back surgery, a necessary procedure to alleviate pains he'd been having dating back to the late summer.

On Friday, ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported McGary's surgery is scheduled for Tuesday. Putting himself under the knife means McGary's season is almost definitely over, though the school has not officially made that statement.

As of now, McGary -- still seen by many as a future NBA pick -- remains out indefinitely.

McGary was a preseason All-American selection after his dominant performance last March helped Michigan reach its first national title game in 20 years. But after missing most of the preseason with this back issue, McGary returned midway through November, never really playing at full potential. In spite of that, he still averaged 9.5 points and 8.3 rebounds in 11 games this season.

"My back problems have been a daily challenge ever since late August," McGary said in a statement last week. "We have worked hard rehabbing the injury, and I thought that everything was proceeding in the right direction until the last two weeks. I have consulted with my family, my coaches and our doctors and decided the best option now is to have surgery."

Michigan won on the road at Minnesota Thursday night. The Wolverines are now 9-4 and play against Northwestern on Sunday.
