I do admit, I love John Calipari as a college basketball coach when he's loose and loose-lipped. The man carries grudges, has the memory of an elephant and is quick to remind just about anyone about slights (existent or not) against him and his program, if you give him the platform. He also picks his spots, and a few times a year he'll dish out a veiled shot or two at a coach or a program or a fan base.
Well, 2014 is seeing Cal go at it less than a week into the new year. On his weekly call-in radio show for the IMG Network in Kentucky, UK's coach went after some media members for how they reacted -- or what he thought they were expecting to write -- and wrote (or didn't) off Kentucky's 73-66 home win over Louisville on Dec. 28. The audio of that is above. Here's the transcipted quote, in full.
"Other teams lose three and four games: 'Ah, they'll be great wait 'til they get in there.' WE LOSE? Oh, you got people -- that Louisville game we had 100 writers. Hundred media. Seven wrote stories. Ninety-three had the other story written. 'They're gonna lose. You can't do it. Cal doesn't care about Kentucky or basketball, college, he's just trying to get guys to the NBA. This is bad for col--. But we won, and we won big with young team. And Julius (Randle) didn't play the second half! So they couldn't write the story. So seven were written."
Sometime later in the program, Cal then made reference to how Kentucky's fan base is, in terms of behavior and expectations. He took a veiled shot at Indiana -- a place it seems Kentucky will never play at again so long as Cal is coach -- for the way its fans reacted/treated Kentucky upon that memorable upset of then-No. 1 Wildcats during the 2011-12 season.
"We don't have obnoxious -- well, we may, but I never hear them -- but we don't treat the other team with disrespect. If we won a game against the No. 1 team in the country in Rupp Arena, would people charge the court? No. You're supposed to (win.) You're Kentucky. We don't do that here."
