I understand the idea of spreading the attention.
I don't necessarily agree with it.
But I know it exists.
So I'm confident some of you are reading this and thinking, "Did CBSSports.com really give its Player of the Week award to Doug McDermott again?" If you fall into that category and are baffled by the decision, don't be. Because there's nothing baffling about it.
All things equal, sure, I'd like to change things up.
But I'm more interested in being right.
And the right thing to do on this Monday is to recognize McDermott just like I did last Monday, because he had another brilliant week for a nationally relevant team, and that's basically the criteria. Did you do great things for a good or great team? That's what I ask each Monday of potential candidates. McDermott, for the second straight week, checked that box.
First McDermott got 19 points, five rebounds and four assists in an 81-62 win at DePaul that doubled as the Bluejays' eighth-consecutive victory by double-digits, then he put 35 points, seven rebounds and three assists on a redhot Xavier team in a 95-89 win that pushed Creighton to 14-2 overall and 4-0 in the Big East. Add it up, and McDermott averaged 27.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two wins while shooting 19-of-40 from the field and 5-of-12 from 3-point range, and he now has six games of 30-plus points this season.
Simply put, I won't just take that for granted.
And you shouldn't just take that for granted, either.
The fact that McDermott is posting big numbers on the regular and casually putting 35 on programs as good as Xavier's is remarkable, and that it's no longer surprising when he does it is a testament to his greatness that will forever be recognized here. When another player from another nationally relevant team does similar things, I'll give McDermott the week off. But he was the best option this week ... just like last week.
