Colorado's hopes for a hallmark season took a huge hit Monday afternoon.

As ESPN first reported, Spencer Dinwiddie has torn his left ACL, and so surgery will be required in the coming days. The procedure will end Dinwiddie's junior season. He averaged 14.7 points, 3.8 assists and 3.1 rebounds this year for the 14-3 Buffaloes, who are 3-1 in the Pac-12 and face UCLA on Thursday.

Colorado is coming off a 71-54 loss at Washington on Sunday, where Dinwiddie suffered the injury. At the time of the incident CU was up 25-22. Askia Booker, arguably Colorado's second-best player, was held scoreless without Dinwiddie on the court.

Dinwiddie tweeted the following Monday night:

The Buffaloes haven't made the Sweet 16 in 50 years, and asking them to do so without their star point guard is a very tall task. Dinwiddie was ranked No. 31 overall in the most recent list of NBA draft propsects by CBSSports.com's Gary Parrish.

An initial version of this story stated Colorado's lead was 29-26 at the time of Dinwiddie's injury instead of 25-22.
