After waiting nearly an entire year, P.J. Hairston is guaranteed to finally be able to play organized basketball again. Hairston announced his intentions to head to the NBA's D-League last week, and on Tuesday the Texas Legends made it official. The developmental club for the Dallas Mavericks picked Hairston first overall during Tuesday's player pool selection.

The team announced it on Twitter.

And Hairston, after retweeting the above tweet, sent the following:

“I'm extremely grateful that the Texas Legends organization believes in my abilities, and thank them for signing me to their team” Hairston said in a statement released by the D-League. “I intend to take full advantage of this opportunity. This is another positive step towards accomplishing the goals I set out for myself. This is an exciting time.”

Hairston is expected to play for the Legends on Saturday.

The former North Carolina forward was ineligible to play college basketball this season in light of numerous transgressions in the spring and summer of 2013. Hairston was pulled over three times, twice while driving rental cars connected to an ex-convict. After the school opted not to present his case to the NCAA for eligibililty in December, Hairston's season -- and career -- with UNC was effectively over.

He could've opted to stay on campus, remain enrolled in classes and train with the program in the lead-up for the 2014 NBA Draft, but instead opted to take this path. Hairston will still be eligible to be selected by any team in June.
