Judge overrules ISU's decision; allows Bubu Palo back on team

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

Remember Bubu Palo? Well, you probably don't. But plenty of Iowa State fans do. He played three seasons for the Cyclones; the guard averaged less than four points during his time.

He was dismissed from the team and barred from Cyclones basketball over the summer by ISU president Steven Leath after Iowa State's Office of Judicial Affairs deemed Palo violated the school's conduct code for students.

Palo was suspended from the team last season for more than two months after a second-degree sexual assault charge was brought in September 2012 from an alleged incident dating to May 2012. The charge was eventually dropped, last January, and that's when Palo was allowed back on the team. But the ensuing review from the school led Leath to remove him from the team.

On Thursday a Webster County district judge decided Palo has a right to be part of the team -- at least for now. That decision overruled the school's, and pending a future court date, Palo has been granted the chance to play for Iowa State in whatever capacity the school now deems fit. He is expected to rejoin the team on Monday.

"We are disappointed to learn of the district court judge's decision to reinstate Bubu Palo to our basketball team," Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a statement. "We believe the university should have the sole right and responsibility to determine any student's participation in extracurricular activities at Iowa State University."

Palo's next, and possibly final, court date regarding this matter has not yet been decided.
