Academics sideline Georgetown's Josh Smith for rest of season

Georgetown center Josh Smith will miss the remainder of the season because of academic issues, coach John Thompson III announced Friday.

Smith transferred from UCLA to Georgetown after the first semester of his junior season and, in a controversial move that defied traditional logic, was ruled eligible before the start of this season and given two full years of eligibility. Obviously, Smith has squandered the NCAA's questionable generosity. The 6-foot-10 center was benched in advance of Georgetown's Jan. 8 game at Providence, and now he's officially done for the season. Smith was averaging 11.5 points and 3.4 rebounds. The Hoyas are 10-3 with him, 1-4 without him.

Smith's future beyond this season remains uncertain.

Georgetown plays at Creighton on Saturday.
