Iowa Supreme Court allows Bubu Palo to play at Iowa State

The Iowa Supreme Court has made its decision: Bubu Palo should be allowed to play college basketball at Iowa State -- for now.

The court came down with its judgment on Friday, according to the Ames Tribune, after the school appealed a Webster County judges decision last week to allow Palo back onto the team after he was removed last September.

Palo, a bench player/point guard, was initially accused with second-degree sexual assault in May of 2013. Those charges were later dropped. After the charges were dropped, a review by the school concluded Palo had violated ISU's student code of conduct, and so he was dismissed from the team by school president Steven Leath. The dismissal came after the transfer window closed, so Palo had no options to play at a new school in 2013-14.

Leath publicly opposed the Webster County Court decision last week, and the school's Board of Regents requested a higher body come down on the situation. It ultimately sided with the smaller court, not Iowa State.

The decision, as noted in one of our stories earlier this week, is landmark in that it's the first case to go so hastily to a State Supreme Court regarding a Division I basketball player's eligibility. Palo's return to the team is still considered a "temporary basis" situation, per the Tribune's report. His overall case is still making its way through the legal proceedings, but since ISU is in the middle of a season and court procedure can be a slow process, an immediate/temporary verdict had to be decided upon.

Iowa State is home to Kansas State on Saturday. Both teams are ranked; Iowa State is No. 16, K-State No. 22.
