Eric Atkins was given a green light to take the reigns of the Notre Dame offense and go. He played all 45 minutes of Notre Dame's overtime win against Boston College , redeeming a missed free throw at the end of regulation with a game-winning three in overtime.
Irish coach Mike Brey adjusted the team's game plan to set Atkins up with more high ball screens to initiate offense, and he responded with 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting. It was the same set Notre Dame ran in the last seconds of overtime, allowing the senior guard to make a play.
"I knew when I got the ball back, I wanted to make a play at the buzzer," Atkins told the ACC Network after the game. "I crossed over, and got a nice look at it."
Notre Dame needed a win in the worst way. After beating Duke on Jan. 4, the Irish finished January by losing six of their next seven games.
"Just a win is good for us," Atkins added. "We went through a tough patch for a few games, this was big for us."
