CBSSports.com Player of the Week: Creighton's Doug McDermott

Doug McDermott finished with 26 points and five rebounds in a win at Butler on Thursday, then, three days later, got 39 points and seven rebounds in a 101-80 victory over Villanova that launched the Bluejays into the top 10 of the Top 25 (and one).

For the week, the Creighton star was:

  • 24-of-37 from the field.
  • 7-of-11 from 3-point range.
  • 10-of-10 from the free throw line.

Beyond that, McDermott passed Larry Bird and moved into 13th on the NCAA's Division I scoring list with 2,863 points. So it should be no surprise that the favorite to sweep National Player of the Year honors is again the CBSSports.com National Player of the Week.

"It's pretty crazy," McDermott told reporters late Sunday in Omaha when asked about passing Bird, a Hall of Famer, on the NCAA's career scoring list. "That's one of my idols. ... It's really cool just to be in that category with some of those guys."

Want McDermott's updated season statistics?

He's now averaging 25.9 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 51.3 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from 3-point range and 90.1 percent from the free throw line.

Creighton next plays at Marquette -- where McDermott needs 10 points to pass Tyler Hansbrough and move into 12th place on the NCAA's Division I career scoring list, and 22 points to pass Elvin Hayes and move into 11th place on the NCAA's Division I career scoring list. Considering McDermott has scored at least 25 points in five straight games and is averaging 32.2 points over that stretch, it's reasonable to suggest he'll pass Hansbrough and Hayes in Milwaukee, then set his sights on Alfredrick Hughes (2,914 career points), Danny Manning (2,951 career points) and Oscar Robertson (2,973 career points).
