Poll Attacks: How can you have Kentucky ranked above Texas?

Kentucky is in the Top 25 despite three top-50 RPI wins and four losses outside of the top 50. (USATSI)

Texas lost one game last week to a currently ranked school. Kentucky lost two games last week to currently unranked schools. And yet the voters dropped the Longhorns from the Top 25 and kept the Wildcats in the Top 25, and this is why the Poll Attacks will live forever.

Let's get it!

Associated Press poll: I was genuinely surprised Monday afternoon when I heard that Kentucky is still ranked in the AP poll because I don't see how a team with only three top-50 RPI wins can be ranked after a week in which it lost to Arkansas and South Carolina.

The Wildcats now have four losses outside of the top 50.

That includes a loss to a South Carolina team that's 174th in the RPI.

That's a rough body of work.

And yet the AP voters still ranked Kentucky and didn't rank Texas even though UK has three top-50 wins and four losses outside of the top 50 while UT has seven top-50 wins and zero losses outside of the top 50. Seriously, Texas has more good wins and fewer bad losses than Kentucky, and it's not even debatable. But Kentucky is in the AP poll and Texas is not. I suppose the Longhorns would've been better off losing two games last week to currently unranked teams instead of losing just one game to a currently ranked team. But I digress.

So who contribituted to this wackiness the most?

Jeff Faraudo.

He has Kentucky 16th and Texas unranked on his ballot, and he has Iowa State all the way down at 25, which obviously drives me crazy. I mean, how could anybody rank UK ahead of Iowa State and Texas when you look at the bodies of work of all three schools?

Let me make it simple for you.

Check this out ...

----- Top 50 wins -----

Iowa State: 8
Texas: 7
Kentucky: 3

-----Losses outside of top 50 -----

Iowa State: 1
Texas: 0
Kentucky: 4

I'll bottom line it like this: If you're an AP voter who put Kentucky on your ballot ahead of Texas, feel free to email me at GaryParrishCBS@gmail.com and try to explain it. And if you're an AP voter who put Kentucky on your ballot ahead of Iowa State, seriously, just quit.

Coaches poll: I think Oklahoma State will make the NCAA Tournament, and I won't be surprised if the Cowboys advance. But why are they getting votes in a Top 25 poll?

OSU received four points in Monday's coaches poll.

The Cowboys did this even though they are ...

  • 7-9 in the Big 12.
  • 2-5 against the top 25 of the RPI.
  • 4-9 against the top 50 of the RPI.

That body of work is why Jerry Palm has the Cowboys as a 10 seed right now.

That body of work is why it's silly for OSU to be getting Top 25 votes right now.
