Virginia's loss to Maryland likely ends hopes for No. 1 seed

Heading into the week, one could have made a case for three ACC teams to be a potential No. 1 seed on Selection Sunday. Syracuse probably had the best resume, but Duke or Virginia could have won out and likely been considered as well.

With Virginia losing in overtime to Maryland on Sunday afternoon, the Cavaliers have probably dropped from the group of potential top seeds.

They will still win the ACC regular-season title by at least two games and be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, but the resume doesn't seem strong enough -- even with an ACC tournament title -- to beat out Villanova, Wisconsin or Kansas to get a No. 1 seed.

Virginia has just two top-25 wins, and the only non-conference victories over top-100 opponents were SMU and Missouri State. They lost to Green Bay in the non-conference and were also absolutely steamrolled by bubble team Tennessee back in December. Wins over Syracuse and North Carolina in league play are nice, but the unbalanced schedule that led to their gaudy ACC record also meant they didn't get multiple chances at those teams. The Florida States and North Carolina States of the world aren't reusme-boosters when it comes to No. 1 seeds.

With all that said, Virginia is still ahead of Duke in the pecking order right now, as the Blue Devils have two sub-100 losses and a .500 record away from home.

The ACC tournament has plenty of intrigue, given the quality among the top four, but it doesn't look likely to produce a No. 1 seed on Selection Sunday.
