Awful news coming out of Iowa.
The tumor removed during surgery on Fran McCaffery's son on Wednesday was found to be malignant, the Iowa head coach announced on Friday.
“Today, we received word from doctors that the tumor that was removed during our son Patrick's surgery on Wednesday is malignant. We will visit with doctors as soon as possible to determine Patrick's treatment," McCaffery said in a statement.
“Margaret and I would like to thank everyone again for the outpouring of support from across the country for our son Patrick and family this past week. We appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers.”
Patrick McCaffery, who turned 14 on Thursday, found out he had a tumor on his thyroid earlier this month. He underwent surgery on Wednesday to have it removed. His father was at the hospital for the surgery, then flew back to Dayton to coach against Tennessee in the First Four. Iowa lost to the Volunteers.
