Iowa's Fran McCaffery confirms that son's thyroid tumor was malignant

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery released a statement Friday and confirmed the thyroid tumor that his 13-year-old son Patrick had removed Wednesday is malignant.

"We received word from doctors that the tumor that was removed during our son Patrick's surgery on Wednesday is malignant," McCaffery said. "We will visit with doctors as soon as possible to determine Patrick's treatment."

No other details were disclosed.

McCaffery coached Iowa Wednesday in the First Four hours after his son's surgery. The Hawkeyes lost to Tennessee, which subsequently beat UMass in the Round of 64. Iowa finished the season 20-13 overall, 9-9 in the Big Ten.
