There may not have been a team that put on a more impressive show in the first round that Pittsburgh, which eviscerated Colorado 77-48. Talib Zanna owned the paint with 18 points, and he'll have to play well again against Florida's Patric Young if the Panthers are to pull off the upset today.
Florida let Albany hang around far too long in the Gators' opening game here. The Great Danes were able to neutralize Michael Frazier, Florida's best three point shooter and he'll need to have a good game today if Florida is going to be able to open up the inside for Young and Will Yeguete.
The Cards survived a very tough game against Manhattan on Thursday night. They struggled to shoot all night, converting only 36% of their shots and were only 4-13 from three. Two of those three pointers came late from Luke Hancock and ended up being the difference. Louisville shot well from the line, but the Cards will have to be more efficient offensively if they are to win today.
Only two teams here in Orlando played worse than Saint Louis on Thursday, but lucky for the Billikens, North Carolina State was one of them. The Wolfpack imploded in the last five minutes of regulation and Saint Louis took advantage, sending the game to overtime and eventually winning. The only part of the Billikens' game that was effective was the press they used in the last five minutes that helped spark the comeback, and their shooting late in the game. If they can keep that momentum up, they'll have a shot at Louisville. However, they were abysmal from the FT line, so they better build a big lead. Rob Loe was fantastic for SLU Thursday night, but they need their stars, Jordair Jett and Dwayne Evans to also play well today.
The picks; Florida and Louisville.
