By Jon Rothstein | CBS Sports

Rice will hire VCU assistant Mike Rhoades to fill its head coaching vacancy, sources told CBSSports.com.

Rhoades has been on Shaka Smart's staff since Smart's first season in Richmond in 2009.

Prior to his stint at VCU, Rhoades enjoyed a long period of success at Division III Randolph-Macon (Virginia). In 10 seasons as a head coach, Rhoades posted a record of 197-97 and advanced to the Division III NCAA Tournament four times.

Rice finished 7-23 during 2013-14 season, its final one under Ben Braun.
