After leading New Mexico to a 27-win campaign in his first season as the head coach, Craig Neal was awarded with a two-year contract extension.

Neal is now under contract with the Lobos until the 2019-20 season.

"We are excited about the direction of the program under Craig's leadership, and we are glad that he wants to be here at the University of New Mexico," athletic director Paul Krebs said in a statement.

Neal took over for Steve Alford after Alford departed to take the head coaching position at UCLA. The Lobos went 27-7 this season, winning the Mountain West Conference tournament and going to the NCAA Tournament. They were bounced in the Round of 64 by Stanford.

"I'm thankful to Paul, President Frank and the administration," Neal said. "We have a tremendous program here at New Mexico, with an unbelievable facility and great fans. Having raised my children here in New Mexico, I'm excited to be the coach here, and I'm excited for our future as a program."

Neal had been the associate head coach under Alford for six seasons prior to being named head coach.
