Both campuses see arrests, vandalism in wake of title game

UConn's Storrs campus erupted following Monday night's National Championship victory – the program's fourth in the last 15 years, while some Kentucky fans in Lexington lit couch fires after dropping the title game 60-54.

Both campuses had to deal with raucous and destructive crowds, regardless of the outcome of their respective teams.

In Lexington, police were forced to use tear gas to tame the emotional crowd. A government official noted that at least 17 couches were lit on fire and that there were 18 injuries, most of them minor. There were also seven arrests. The Kentucky student paper, The Kentucky Kernel, reported that police also used “pepper spray bullets” to break up a fight.

Unsurprisingly, UConn students celebrated with irreverent jubilation, smashing a window, breaking street lights, and flipping furniture in the aftermath of their win. Campus police reported at least 30 arrests by early Tuesday morning. “A lot of it was alcohol related,” UConn spokesman Tom Breen said. “There was a breach of peace, destruction of property, and we had a fireworks charge.” No word on how Derek the RA is holding up.

The aftermath likely mirrored the energy inside Gampel Pavilion as 10,000 Huskies fans packed the stadium to cheer on their team while watching from three large movie screens. Each Shabazz Napier 3-pointer brought the raucous crowd to their feet, ultimately leading to an impromptu court-storming once the final seconds ticked off.

The best part? UConn fans have a chance to do it all over again tonight as their women's team takes on Notre Dame for another National Title.
