Pitt's Derrick Randall suspended following DUI arrest/charge

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

In the offseason, coaches do a lot of hoping and praying that there players stay out of trouble entirely.

But we regularly pass along news that shows college-age players simply can't stay on the straight and narrow.

The latest is Pittsburgh center Derrick Randall, who the school has indefinitely suspended after he was reportedly arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. Randall was also reportedly charged with use of "a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a controlled dangerous substance," according to the Bergen Record.

The site of the citation? Rutgers University. That's where Randall played for two years before transferring to Jamie Dixon's program. Randall transferred out after the Mike Rice scandal, and in fact is suing the university over Rice's treatment.

“The incident involving Derrick Randall is not only surprising, but incredibly disappointing,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said in a press release. “Although I believe it was out of character for Derrick, he has been indefinitely suspended.”

More:

Rutgers University police Lt. Paul F. Fischer told the Bergen Record that an officer initiated a motor vehicle stop on a car that was operating with its headlights off and the subsequent investigation led to two arrests: Randall and his passenger, Abayomi O. Olaogun, 19, of Hillside, N.J. Olaogun was charged with use of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Randall averaged 2.4 points and 2.1 rebounds last season.
