By Eye on College Basketball staff | CBSSports.com

Brad Underwood will remain head coach at Stephen F. Austin, the school announced Wednesday.

CBSSports.com and other outlets reported Tuesday that Underwood was offered the coaching vacancy at Southern Miss, and that he was expected to accept though no agreement had been reached.

"Coach Underwood has indicated to me that he will remain a Lumberjack," SFA athletic director Robert Hill said in a statement. "I look forward to another exciting season with him leading our program, and we will continue to move forward with Coach Underwood and what should be a great basketball team.”

Underwood just completed his first season as a Division I head coach by going 32-3 overall and 18-0 in the Southland Conference. The Lumberjacks advanced to the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament by defeating VCU. Underwood won the 2014 Joe B. Hall Coach of the Year award, which is presented annually to the top first-year coach in college basketball.

USM will now move on to alternative candidates. Former Nebraska coach Doc Sadler, Southeastern Louisiana head coach Jay Ladner and Wichita State assistant Greg Heiar are among the men expected to be in play.
