Southern Miss has hired Doc Sadler as its new coach, sources confirmed to CBSSports.com's Gary Parrish.

The school subsequently announced the hiring.

“My family and I are very excited to be joining the Southern Miss family," Sadler said in a release. "I look forward to being a part of the unbelievable tradition of the Golden Eagle basketball program and building on the great foundation already in place. I can't wait to meet both our players and fans. We're going to do some special things together.”

Sadler spent the past season as an assistant coach at Iowa State after spending one season on Bill Self's staff at Kansas. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Nebraska for six seasons and at UTEP for two seasons.

“We've hired one of the great coaches in America and a perfect match for Southern Miss in Doc Sadler," athletic director Bill McGillis said. “He is universally respected by his peers and regarded as one of the great coaching minds and recruiters in the country. Importantly, he will be a magnificent fit in our community. Our students, faculty, alumni and fans will love his engaging and genuine personality.”

Sadler replaces Donnie Tyndall, who left for the vacancy at Tennessee.

The news was first reported by ESPN.com.
