Oregon State search still focused on Howland, but other candidates exist

Ben Howland has spoken with Oregon State officials, and sources told on Wednesday that the former UCLA coach remains the favorite to replace Craig Robinson, if he wants the job. But the Oregonian reported late Wednesday that no formal announcement is expected until late next week, either way, because Oregon law requires that the men's basketball opening be posted for seven days before a hire is made.

The job was posted online Wednesday.

That means the earliest Oregon State could introduce a coach is May 14.

It's also worth noting that Oregon law requires the state's public universities to interview a qualified minority candidate, or at least make a good-faith effort to attempt to find a qualified minority candidate, before making a hire, according to the Oregonian. To comply, the Oregonian reported that Oregon State could interview former Portland Trail Blazers guards Terry Porter and Lionel Hollins, both of whom are interested and have "contacted the Beavers directly," according to the paper. Porter is a former head coach of the Phoenix Suns. Hollins is a former head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Another candidate is Portland native Damon Stoudamire.

Stoudamire, a former NBA Rookie of the Year, is now on Sean Miller's staff at Arizona.

Gary Parrish is a senior college basketball columnist for and college basketball insider for the CBS Sports Network. The Mississippi native also hosts an award-winning radio show in Memphis. He lives in that area with his wife, two sons and two dogs.
