ACC will adopt 30-second shot clock for trial run

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

The Atlantic Coast Conference is holding its annual spring meetings right now, and we're getting a lot of information from the league. Commissioner John Swofford is spearheading a good batch of change across a few sports, in fact. There's a new logo. Basketball has changed its tournament schedule. On the football side of things, the schedule is on its way to being unconventional.

There's also now another break in convention on the basketball side. The league will adopt a 30-second shot clock in exhibition games next season. College hoops has run on a 35-second clock since the 1993-94 season.

"Our coaches and ADs both felt it would be an enhancement to the game in today's world," Swofford said, according to an ESPN.com report. "It adds more possessions and potentially would speed up the game."

It actually makes sense that the ACC is opting to do this. Last season, according to KenPom.com, the ACC averaged 61.8 possessions in league play, making it the slowest league in all of college basketball. (The average hovers around 66 possessions.)

A widespread survey of college basketball coaches by CBSSports.com last summer indicated the rule change most in desire was a shortened shot clock. Yet it doesn't appear there's a lot of momentum for that at the most recent meeting by the men's college basketball rules committee. However, the ACC will report back to the rules committee on its trial run.

It's possible a shortened clock could come in the next four years or so, and if that happens, the ACC will in part be the league responsible for the change.
