Fred Hoiberg talked with Warriors before they hired Steve Kerr

The best sign yet that Fred Hoiberg will in fact coach Iowa State next season didn't come when he agreed to a new deal with his alma mater earlier this month because you know as well as I know that coaching agreements at the collegiate level rarely mean a thing.

Honestly, I didn't pay much attention to that extension.

So, no, that wasn't the best sign yet that Hoiberg is staying at ISU.

The best sign yet came Friday morning when Tim Kawakami, the columnist from the Mercury News, tweeted that an NBA source told him that Golden State actually spoke with Hoiberg about its vacancy before hiring Steve Kerr. To be clear, nobody is suggesting that Hoiberg rejected an offer, or that the talks were even substantive. But the talks did happen, and a source told CBSSports.com that those talks should be interpreted as further proof that Hoiberg is only going to make himself a real candidate for great NBA opportunities -- i.e., like inheriting a 51-win team led by Stephen Curry -- and the fact that Golden State has opened and closed means that's one less great NBA opportunity capable of luring Hoiberg away.

Going forward, Hoiberg would take a call from the Lakers for the same reasons anybody would take a call from the Lakers, and if Indiana opens -- or if Kevin Durant decides to fire Scott Brooks in Oklahoma City for some reason -- then, obviously, those are also the types of situations that would intrigue any man. But short of a development in one of those areas, it appears that Iowa State fans can probably relax a little ... at least until next year.
