Report: Minneapolis pushing to host Final Four

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

After edging out New Orleans for the 2018 Super Bowl (SBLII for the Romans out there), Minneapolis is now eyeing the Final Four.

According to a report in the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, Minneapolis has applied and bid to host a Final Four in the years 2017-2020. Moreover, it is one of eight finalists.

Typically, the NCAA likes to have sites that host the Final Four host an earlier round of the tournament the previous year, Michele Kelm-Helgen, chairwoman of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, said. That means 2017 is out. And in 2018 the stadium will host the Super Bowl.

So most likely, the local bid will focus on 2019-20 for the Final Four, with preliminary rounds in earlier years, she said.

The site would be the new $1 billion Minnesota Vikings football stadium, set to open in 2016. Minnesota last hosted a Final Four in 2001 and 1992.
