Former NBA coach Eric Musselman joins LSU staff

LSU had its best offseason news come in the form of an assistant coach.

The school announced Tuesday that Eric Musselman will join Johnny Jones' coaching staff. He's been hired as associate head coach.

The move will be official pending a background check and an OK from the Board of Supervisors, per the school. Musselman was at Arizona State the past two seasons. He's now 49 and is considered one of the better X-and-O minds in the game. He previously was a head coach for the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings.

"We are excited about the addition of coach Eric Musselman," Jones said in a statement. "He brings a wealth of NBA and college experience that will be beneficial as we strive to continue to take LSU Basketball to new heights. He will be involved in all aspects of our program."

LSU had a talented but inconsistent team last season. The Bayou Bengals finished 20-14 and missed the NCAA Tournament.

"I really am excited to join the LSU family, a place that has such a storied athletic program, and help Coach Jones and the staff continue to make strides,” Musselman said. “It will be challenging to learn about another great conference as the SEC. Anytime you can join a program that has a Final Four appearance in the past decade and 20 NCAA Tournaments overall, you know great things can happen again."

LSU brings back Jarell Martin and Jordan Mickey, two players with NBA potential. The Tigers are poised for another 20-win season, and with Musselman, expectations will be no less than the field of 68.
