Mississippi Valley State announces hiring of its next head coach

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

On Friday, Mississippi Valley State made Andre Payne's hiring official. He takes over as coach of the Delta Devils, meaning every D-I coaching spot has now been filled for the 2014-15 season.

Payne previously coached at Wiley College, located in Marshall, Texas. His teams won two conference titles and made the NAIA tournament twice. He went 146-104 during his time there.

"I'd like to thank MVSU president William Bynum and athletic director Dianthia Ford-Kee for giving me this opportunity," Payne said at a press conference Friday. "I'd also like to thank my wife and kids who have been with me through all the years. ... This is a true blessing for me and my family. I'm honored and humble for the trust that has been bestowed upon me."

MVSU most recently made national headlines with its prior coach -- and not in good light. It was almost a year ago to the day that former Delta Devils coach Chico Potts was suspended following an arrested for alleged domestic violence. MVSU and Potts parted ways this spring.

"Mississippi Valley State has a rich tradition in men's basketball, and we're going to do everything in our power to keep that tradition up," Payne said.

MVSU last made the NCAA Tournament in 2012 under former coach Sean Woods.
