Georgia F Brandon Morris dismissed following pot arrest and felony charge

By Matt Norlander | Staff Writer

Georgia has now dismissed junior forward Brandon Morris.

The announcement came from Bulldogs coach Mark Fox on Monday afternoon.

"This program has a strong expectation of citizenship and every one of our players understands this," Fox said in a statement. "This expectation does not mean that mistakes will not happen. When they do I always deal with them appropriately. Brandon had a very clear understanding of our expectation. Unfortunately, I've had to dismiss him from our team. We've offered Brandon as much help as we can as he leaves, in hope that he can continue his career somewhere else."

The statement came after a troublesome weekend for Morris. It was news any college coach doesn't want to be alerted to, at any hour: one of your players has been arrested while you are away, recruiting.

It's what Fox faced early Sunday morning, as he learned that Morris was arrested on a felony charge of marijuana possession with intent to distribute said weed. According to multiple reports, Morris was processed at Clarke County Jail at 3:21 a.m. Sunday morning.

He was released less than eight hours later via $2,500 bond.

Though it failed to make the NCAAs last season, Georgia did play above expectation and finished 20-14. Morris was a decent part of that, starting most games and averages 8.6 points and 3.4 boards. But he missed the first three games of the 2013-14 season due to undisclosed violations of team policy.

This is a swift move on Fox's behalf. Whereas myriad players at other programs in the past have violated team rules on multiple occasions, only to be kept around, Fox wasted no time. He opted not to "let the legal process play out" or anything of the like. Clearly there was a line Morris knew he could not cross, but he did anyway.

And now Fox and the Georgia staff will continue to recruit in the live July period -- with an extra scholarship available.
