Four-star PG Alterique Gilbert sees stock rise in class of 2016

By Jeff Borzello | College Basketball Writer

LAS VEGAS -- Alterique Gilbert isn't considered one of the elite point guards in 2016 just yet, but he's bound to improve due to one thing: he's learning first-hand from one of the greatest point guards in the world.

Gilbert plays for Team CP3, an AAU team sponsored and occasionally coached by Chris Paul.

"It's a great experience," Gilbert said. "He teaches me a lot. I'm just lucky to be involved in his program."

Gilbert was impressive at the Nike Peach Jam last week, consistently making plays throughout the tournament. He is very quick and shifty with the ball, capable of beating his defender and getting to the rim. Moreover, Gilbert showed some range on his jumper, hitting stepbacks from the top of the key or shots from behind the 3-point line.

"I think people are just finally seeing me," Gilbert said. "I've never really been on the circuit. I'm getting a lot of exposure."

Maryland, Georgia, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, Auburn, Florida State, Miami and Memphis are in the mix for Gilbert right now, while Connecticut, Alabama, VCU, George Washington and others have become involved since Gilbert's performance at the Peach Jam.

"A good program, a winning program," Gilbert said of what he's looking for in a school. "To get better as a player and keep learning."

Gilbert, a 5-foot-9 point guard at Miller Grove (Ga.), is rated as a four-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite for the class of 2016.
