Charleston is considering bringing Bobby Cremins back as its coach

Bobby Cremins is a legitimate candidate to coach at Charleston again on what would amount to an interim basis, multiple sources confirmed to CBSSports.com on Wednesday.

Cremins spent five full seasons at Charleston before taking a medical leave of absence in January of his sixth season. Less than two months later, in March 2012, he announced his retirement, at which point Charleston hired Doug Wojcik fresh off of a 17-14 season at Tulsa. Wojick was fired earlier this month after two investigations led to allegations of verbal and physical abuse of both players and athletic department officials.

Former Charleston great Anthony Johnson was immediately identified as the frontrunner to replace Wojcik, but The Post and Courier reported Wednesday that some members of the school's search committee are hesitant to hire Johnson because he has no coaching experience. Thus, a compromise might be to let Johnson work under Cremins for a year before becoming the actual head coach of his alma mater in advance of the 2015-16 season, meaning Johnson could be hired as a de facto coach-in-waiting under Cremins.

Multiple sources told CBSSports.com that Cremins is open to returning.

An attempt to reach Cremins, 67, for comment late Wednesday was unsuccessful.

Charleston has already interviewed at least six candidates -- most notably Johnson and former Charlotte coach and current North Carolina State assistant Bobby Lutz. A decision, one way or another, is expected (but not guaranteed) to come by the end of the week.
