Three-star Ghanian basketball prospect drowns

By Matt Norlander | College Basketball Writer

A 17-year-old three-star basketball recruit from Ghana is dead after his kayak flipped on him, causing him to drown off the coast of San Diego.

Abdul Shanun lost his life Saturday while taking a trip in Mission Bay.

The news was first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune. Shanun previously played for the New York Lightning grassroots basketball program, which tweeted out its condolences and sadness over the weekend. He recently moved to San Diego to be part of the Coastal Elite program, and to attend Balboa City School.

Eerie? Shanun's final two tweets.

It's believed that Shanun did not know how to swim, so when his kayak capsized, he was immediately in serious trouble.

From the Union-Tribune:

Witnesses saw him cling to a life preserver for a short time, then he lost his grip on it and sank into the water off Santa Clara Point Recreation Center. He did not know how to swim, authorities said. Lifeguards, divers and boats equipped with sonar technology searched the bay's murky water until dark, then resumed looking for his body Sunday morning.

He was found in about 25 feet of water about 9:35 a.m.

Shanun, who played power forward and stood 6 feet, 8 inches, came to the United States as part of a basketball and educational transition program. He was being courted by San Diego State, Seton Hall, Portland and Fresno State, among others.

After being offered a scholarship to play at a private school in Massachusetts in 2012, Shanun made the trek from Africa to the U.S.

NBA veteran and former Boston College star Jared Dudley expressed his prayers on Twitter.

Adding to the sadness, Shanun tweeted the following in early July.
