Postgame Report -
You can thank the backcourt for putting the ball in the basket as the Spartans shot over 50% for most of the game. Iowa was undersized with the absence of Tate, but the Spartan backcourt was also just unstoppable. 58 of the 71 points were scored by guards. Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers combined for 46 points against Ohio State and they ended up combining for 44 tonight. If the ball did not go into the basket, Suton and Roe both dominated the boards. Michigan State outrebounded another opponent and their perimeter defense held the Hawkeyes to a 8-for-26 3-point shooting effort. Michigan State is 7-1 in the conference and 5-0 in Big Ten road games. That's their best since 1950.
2nd Half - 2:30
53% to 44%. It's not a very free-throw friendly game as you can see. Despite the fast break advantage the Spartans are using all the clock when the ball is in the halfcourt. With 5 unanswered points by the Spartans. They are no longer Iowa's enemy, the clock is.
2nd Half - 4:39
Stopping a run like this and a hot crowd is going to separate the Spartans of yesteryear and today. They come out of the timeout with a screen-running midrange by Summers. Peterson slips up his dribble for his 3rd turnover. Summers is in the air as Jake Kelly reaches in on him. There's a foul and a chance for a shot. And-1.
2nd Half - 5:49
Gatens pops a quick trey to cut the lead to 13. He's 3-7 from downtown. The starting 3 guards for Iowa have 6 combined turnovers. Despite all the Spartan turnovers, Michigan State is moving the ball better with a 16-2 advantage in fast break scoring. Peterson connects on a triple to make it an 11-point lead. Peterson is 2-for-4. Hawkeyes get the ball back and they know what do with it. Jermain Davis is money in transition. We've got a 9 point game after an impressive Hawkeye scoring run. The Carver is alive and breathing. The shows by Peterson and Gatens were contested too.
2nd Half - 7:38
Nice around the back dribble by Kalin Lucas. He shows even better ball control in that paint as he draws a foul and floats one in for an And-1. After combining for 46 points against the Buckeyes, Lucas and Summers have 35 with 7 and a half minutes of basketball to go.
