Postgame -
Illinois never lead through the entire game. McCamey's game-winning shot gave them their first lead. Illinois was cold for the entire 2nd half with two long 3-4 minute scoring droughts. With 3 and a half minutes to go and a double-digit deficit in between these two schools, Illinois brought a full-court press that could not be stopped. They went on a 17-2 run with Trent Meacham leading the way with 12 points and the game-winning assist to McCamey. Northwestern was up as much as 11 points with less than 5 minutes to go and they moved as if the pressure was still on them to win the game. 4 of their turnovers came in the last 3 minutes of play. They were leading for the -entire- game. It was looking like we were going to see an upset but Illinois put together an unbelievable comeback.
2nd Half - 0:00
Meacham finds McCamey. McCamey finds the white square on the backboard. The ball finds the net! Illinois has their first lead of the game and it's happening with only 2 seconds on the clock. They denied the upset with a 5 minute 17-2 run.
2nd Half - :14.5
Thompson gets the inbound and collapses on the ball. He had 2 Wildcats open on the other side of the floor. Instead he gets called for traveling. The Wildcats are one turnover short of matching the Fighting Illini. They simply can't beat the trap but Meacham can beat his defender with a pick. Finger roll to the basket. Great pick by Tisdale. I guess that's why they're undefeated when he scores in double-digits. It looks like Moore was a bit shaken up by the play. This time Northwestern holds onto the ball and works the shot clock. Thompson tries for a layup and Meacham strips him of the ball! The ball rolls down the calf of Thompson. Illini basketball. They are not going to swallow the upset pill as easily as it was looking 5 minutes ago. 3 straight Northwestern turnovers. Illinois has never lead through the entire game!
2nd Half - :55
Another trap. Another picked up dribble. Moore falls over the rock and it's a jumpball whistle. Meacham is in the corner of the court. He leaps over a flurry of teammates and defenders and gets a quick trey off. And in! It's a three-point game! This is an unbelievable comeback. Meacham had to shoot a rainbow for the rafters just to get the shot off. He's got 10 points in the last 4 minutes of play.
2nd Half - 1:25
With the lead cut to 6, Coble is trapped on the half court. He's trying to grip the ball and get his hands together for a timeout. The refs grant it, Northwestern only has 1 left, but if you look down you can see Coble traveled. Dangerous play. It looks like the pressure is on Northwestern. Nash tries to drive in and he is swatted down by Calvin Brock. Mirkovic is trapped in the backcourt. Another picked up dribble. The trapping defense has stripped the Wildcats of all their timeouts.
