The Salukis are surely one of the best unknown teams in all of college basketball. Before last season's NIT bid, they had made it to the big dance 6 years in a row. Coach Lowery got them to run on all cylinders for the first 15 minutes out the gate, but a second half collapse turned a 6 point halftime deficit into an embarrassing 25 point defeat. Carlton Fay is quickly turning into a prime time player from all over the court and his 17 points on a mediocre 6 of 17 from the floor, was enough to pace the Southern Illinois squad. Nick Evans shows he also has a bright future ahead, but the young Salukis have a lot more to learn. Henderson and Singler could have sat out the first half for all we knew, but showed up in style for 33 after the break. Coach K will get them ready for the Coaches vs. Cancer Championship contest and tune in tomorrow for a more fairly matched meeting. Thanks for joining me for some entertaining College hoops action and keep coming back for more.
2nd Half - :00
Duke finally misses at the line as Czyz ends the streak at 24 in a row. Miles Plumlee is the first of 3 talented brothers to try and shine in the Carolina sky. His brother Miles has committed to play next year and the youngest and most talented of the trio, high school sophomore Mason will be on the way in just a few years. Christian Cornelius hits at the buzzer, but Duke wins in a rout, 83-58.
2nd Half - 1:14
Only the 10th turnover for the Salukis, but Duke seems to turn every one into points at the other end. The Devils have cleared their bench as Martynas Pocius and Olek Czyz inject some International flavor into the last minute action. Paulus has been almost invisible on the offensive end, but wakes up just in time to find Williams rushing to the hole for the slam. A second half blowout for the Blue Devils, 81-54.
2nd Half - 2:59
SIU will hopefully turn to their steady play in the first 15 minutes of the game and try and forget about the last 25. Duke will probably try and rest their studs for the next round, while the Salukis also have another game against the loser of the Bruins and Wolverines. Kevin Dillard has produced the most well balanced game for Southern Illinois tonight, with 9 points, 3 boards and 4 assists for the game.
2nd Half - 3:47
When healthy Gerald Henderson should be considered one of the slickest scorers in the country. His 9 point average in the first two games was misguiding to say the least, as his 20 points in the half is more what we have known to expect. The halftime adjustments clearly worked wonders and Coach K knows what makes his players tick. They are shooting almost 20% better from the floor and the Salukis have never surpassed 35%.
