Postgame Report -
Memphis wins their 52nd consecutive Conference USA match with a dominant 2nd half performance. While only forcing half the turnovers they made Tulsa commit, they held the Golden Eagles to 38% shooting from the field and 1-for-6 on three's. Southern Miss was shorthanded and undersized. While they kept up in the 1st Half, they couldn't keep up and ended up getting outscored 41-to-19 in the 2nd. Memphis forced a lot of three-point attempts in the first half but then went 4-for-7 in the 2nd. The Tigers allowed less than 70 points from their opponent for the 12th straight game. The Tigers committed very few turnovers in the 2nd half and got players open whereas the Golden Eagles took plenty of contested shots. The Golden Eagles have now lost 5 straight while the Tigers win their 16th consecutive game of the season. They trail Utah State's streak for the hottest of the nation.
2nd Half - 4:12
Dozier is a 68% free throw shooter who is 7/8 tonight. Craig Craft spins into the paint and scores his first basket since the opening minutes of play when he had 7 of the Golden Eagles' first points. Memphis is either making baskets or getting fouled. They're beating the Southern Miss zone. Eustachy has played zone for most of the game actually. Only 7 Golden Eagles have played. Talk about shorthanded. It would be 8 if you count Barnes, but he's played less than 2 minutes.
2nd Half - 8:15
Sallie almost gets a 5-second turnover. The Tigers tip a few passes but Courtney Beasley gets a putback to put points on the board. Beasley is 6'3 and averages 7 rebounds per game. The Golden Eagles are still defending with a 2-3 zone.
2nd Half - 9:32
While there was a "civil" discussion near the Memphis goal, I don't think anyone shold be ejected. We have a delay as officials review the replay of the foul. Eustachy and his coaching staff attends an annual retreat hosted by Calipari and Brown. The two coaches are friends. The final ruling is a double technical. Sallie gets to shoot his free-throws and we move on.
2nd Half - 9:32
There's a triple by Mack from the corner. Memphis is 4-for-5 from downtown in the 2nd half. Evans gets a steal and that's the 6th Golden Eagle turnover of the half so far. That matches the 1st half total. Sallie runs off for a dunk and takes a hard hack from McCauley. He hits the ground and the Tigers don't like what they're seeing. There's a few pushes and few shoves. We have memories of last year but officials are there to get in between the quarreling parties to cool it down. Calipari shouts to the officials that intentional foul should be called. I'm watching the replay and while it was a hard foul and an even harder fall for Sallie, I think McCauley made an honest play for the ball.
