Even with that in mind, this was a well-deserved win for Missouri. The team lost all of a 12-point second half lead to trail by four with under two minutes remaining, then went on to score nine of the final 10 points to pull off the victory. That earns them the right to take on Memphis in the Sweet 16. The two Tigers will meet in Glendale on Thursday.
Postgame -
The win for the Tigers doesn't come without controversy. The Golden Eagles felt that Tiller should have had to make his own free throws with 5.5 seconds left and that his claim of an injury was only to get English into the game. They also felt like Acker was fouled on his desperation three, allowing him the free throws and at least a chance of one more Marquette possession.
2nd Half - 0:00
Lyons adds a couple free throws to push the Missouri lead out to four, pretty much making moot a non-call on Acker's desperation 3-pointer to beat the buzzer. That's how the game ends, with Missouri holding off Marquette in a wild finish to win by a final score of 83-79.
2nd Half - 0:04
Tiller came down hard after getting fouled, so the Tigers were able to claim that he was injured, thus allowing English to come in for the two free throws. Those are English's first two points since his 15-point outburst in the first half. Marquette still has 5.5 seconds to get something done, but a huge blunder costs them the game. Hayward hesitated on the inbounds pass and stepped over the line for a turnover.
2nd Half - 0:05
Marquette's defense collapses after the timeout, leaving the left side of the lane wide open for Tiller to drive. He gets to the rim, draws a lot of contact, and the layup just barely rims out. Still, he'll have two chances to give the Tigers the lead. Missouri won't leave it up to him, though, and instead has English come in for the attempts. The freshman makes them both for a two-point Tigers lead.
