The Hornets (14-14) started the second half with a 7-0 run after trailing 25-13 at halftime. The run cut the Panthers' (6-22) lead to 33-30. A 3-pointer by Golden tied the score at 38-38 at the 15:15 mark. The Hornets grabbed the lead on a jumper by Jermaine Smith at the 14:25 mark.
The score tied again at 47-47 on a 3-point play by Torry Cornett at the 6:25 mark but the Panthers took the lead at 49-48 on a floater by Jason Breckenridge at the 5:56 mark. The lead changed four times within two minutes before the Hornets took the lead for good on a 3-point shot by Alexander Oliver. The Hornets closed out the game on a 10-4 run.
The Hornets had five players posting double figures. Oliver scored 15 points, Smith and Kevin Spicer each added 11 and Duston Richmond had 10.
Phillip Scott led the Panthers with a game-high 25 points. Oscar Thompson added 16.
Alabama State will play Southern University on Friday.
