No. 6 Gonzaga 102, Pepperdine 73

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga coach Mark Few made sure his team knew at halftime to get the ball to J.P. Batista.

Batista finished with 27 points on 13-of-14 shooting and Adam Morrison had 31 points to lead the sixth-ranked Bulldogs to a 102-73 victory over Pepperdine on Saturday night.

Batista was 7-for-8 from the field in the first half but the Bulldogs held a slim 43-36 at the break. Few made sure his team looked for the senior more after halftime.

"We didn't need to come down and shoot off the first pass," Few said. "He was pretty darn efficient in the post."

Batista made all six of his field goal attempts as Gonzaga outscored the Waves 59-37 in the second half to cruise to its 31st consecutive home victory, tied with Illinois and Southern Illinois for longest streak in the nation.

Adam Morrison, who leads the nation with an average of 28 points per game, led all scorers with 31 points, making 14 of 17 free throws. It was the sixth time this season he has scored at least 30 points.

"He'll go to the next level and score a lot of points," Pepperdine coach Paul Westphal said. "He's very gifted."

Of Batista, a 6-foot-9 senior from Brazil, "He did whatever he wanted to all night," Westphal said.

Derek Raivio added 15 points for Gonzaga, which topped 100 points for the third time this season.

Gonzaga (13-3, 3-0 West Coast Conference) beat Pepperdine for the ninth consecutive time. The Bulldogs never trailed in the game and outscored Pepperdine 44-28 in the paint.

Pepperdine (5-10, 1-2), which starts two freshmen and a sophomore, got 19 points from Tashaan Forehan-Kelly. The Waves were undone by 15 turnovers and Gonzaga's 55 percent shooting, including seven of 10 3-pointers.

"The other team was way more aggressive," Westphal said. "I thought we deferred to them in the second half. We just let them take the game."

Gonzaga has won 14 straight conference games and nine of its last 10 overall.

Morrison, a 6-foot-8 forward, added nine rebounds.

Gonzaga led 43-36 at halftime, and Raivio scored their first seven points of the second half for a 50-38 lead.

Willie Galick's basket brought Pepperdine to within 54-47. But Morrison scored 11 points during a 23-6 run that built a 77-53 lead for the Bulldogs. The Waves did not threaten again.

Galick finished with 13 points and Gregg Barlow 14 for Pepperdine, which shot 46 percent.

In the first, Gonzaga jumped to a 17-9 lead by making eight of its first 11 shots.

Galick's 3-pointer capped an 8-0 Pepperdine run that brought the Waves to within 21-18. Gonzaga replied with a 15-4 run, including six free throws by Morrison, to rebuild a 36-22 lead.

Michael Gerrity's spinning layup capped a quick 9-2 Pepperdine run that took just over 1 minute and cut Gonzaga's lead to 38-31.
