Idaho State at Oregon

Oregon remains undefeated, beats Idaho State handily

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon capped its best start in a decade with one of its most lopsided wins of the season.

Malik Hairston had a season-high 21 points and 12 rebounds to lift No. 22 Oregon to an 84-55 victory over Idaho State on Sunday night.

The Ducks, one of six unbeaten teams, improved to 10-0 for the first time since the 1996-97 season. Oregon twice opened the season 14-0, the last time in 1937-38.

"These guys have been working extremely hard since last spring and last summer," Oregon coach Ernie Kent said. "They've done a good job focusing in on what they need to get done this year."

Aaron Brooks scored 18 points and Bryce Taylor added 14 for the Ducks, who shot 53.3 percent from the field. It was their third consecutive game shooting better than 50 percent.

Oregon was 14-for-29 on 3-point attempts.

"We have so many weapons," Hairston said. "The way we are sharing the basketball gives everybody good looks."

Akbar Abdul-Ahad had 15 points and David Schroeder added 11 for the Bengals (4-6), who shot 36.7 percent.

The Ducks are 3-0 this season against teams from the Big Sky Conference.

"This is our third Top 25 team we have played this year, and from the performance I saw tonight, Oregon is right up there," Idaho State coach Joe O'Brien said. "We don't need to be playing those types of teams right now."

Hairston's 12 rebounds tied a career high and helped Oregon to a 44-26 rebounding edge.

Oregon used a 16-4 run to open the second half, building a 61-32 lead on Churchill Odia's 3-pointer with 14:22 left.

Hairston's layup with 56 seconds left gave the Ducks their largest lead at 84-53.

"We don't want any slippage right now," Kent said. "If we start to look bad or ragged against these teams that shouldn't be playing with us, then it doesn't do us any good to be out there on the floor."

The Ducks took control from the start.

Hairston had 17 points in the first half as Oregon surged to a 45-28 halftime lead.

The Ducks played without their leading scoring, Tajuan Porter, a 5-foot-6 freshman who sprained his toe in Oregon's victory over Eastern Washington on Friday.
