Texas Tech upsets No. 14 Gonzaga to reach Alaska final

CBSSports.com wire reports

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Texas Tech coach Bob Knight is running out of ways to praise Alan Voskuil.

Voskuil's 28 points sparked the Red Raiders to a 73-63 upset of No. 14 Gonzaga on Friday night in the semifinals of the shootout Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.

"He came up with the ball. He rebounded. He did a lot of things and I think he was tired when it was over with," Knight said. "We've got be very careful about that, I think."

Knight joked about praising Voskuil for his effort against Division II Alaska-Anchorage on Thursday.

"Yesterday I told him how well I thought he played defensively, and for two years I never thought I'd ever say that to him about his defense," Knight said.

Against Gonzaga, Voskuil was Mr. Everything on the offensive end. He hit four 3-pointers in the first half and scored a variety of reverse and twisting layups.

No more than five points separated the two teams for the first 16 minutes as there were three ties and five lead changes. But the Red Raiders got strong play off the bench with the reserves scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds to stake Texas Tech to a 41-31 halftime lead. D'walyn Roberts had 11 points.

Knight noted the contributions of reserves Roberts, Charlie Burgess and Esmir Rizvic.

"I think it's important you've got someone coming in and adding something rather than just trying to hold on," Knight said.

Voskuil scored 16 in the first half, including seven straight at one stretch. Roberts and Burgess each finished with 11.

Voskuil also helped pressure the Gonzaga guards Matt Bouldin and Jeremy Pargo into subpar performances.

"We thought that the key for us from a defensive standpiont was Pargo and Bouldin, and if we could make if tough for them, then that was going to be a real key factor for us," Knight said.

Texas Tech's 22-11 first-half rebounding advantage stuck out to Gonzaga coach Mark Few.

"They wanted it a lot more than us tonight," Few said.

Gonzaga (4-1) went scoreless for the first 6:27 of the second half as the Bulldogs turned the ball over repeatedly. The Red Raiders' lead grew to 48-31 on a 3-pointer by Voskuil. Gonzaga whittled it down to 67-61 on two straight baskets by Bouldin with 2:04 to go, but the Zags could get no closer.

Few called the opening minutes of the second half critical. The Zags committed seven turnovers in their first eight possessions.

"This team has got to understand -- they have to make a change after that second turnover," Few said.

Texas Tech was not scoring at that time, Few said, but the Zags could not make a move.

"We just kept serving into the net," Few said.

Gonzaga was led by Micah Downs with 15, 12 in the first half. The Zags play Virginia Tech on Saturday for third place.

Knight's teams were 1-2 in each of his two previous Shootout appearances, the first in the inaugural tournament 30 years ago.

"This is the most enjoyable night I've spent here with basketball," adding that he's been to Alaska many times to go fishing. "The fishing's better than the coaching."

The Red Raiders (4-1) play 22nd-ranked Butler in Saturday's championship.
