Freshman Monroe leads No. 22 Hoyas to rout of Dragons

CBSSports.com wire reports

WASHINGTON. -- Greg Monroe might be a freshman, but he's not playing like one.

Monroe had 20 points and eight rebounds on Saturday, leading No. 22 Georgetown to an 81-53 victory over Drexel.

The 6-foot-11 center from New Orleans was 7-of-9 from the field while adding four assists, three steals and three blocked shots for the Hoyas (2-0). Austin Freeman added 16 points.

Scott Rodgers scored 13 for Drexel (1-1) and Jamie Harris had 12.

After struggling in its opener against Jacksonville, Georgetown jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first five minutes against the Dragons. Eleven of the Hoyas' first 12 field goals came on layups and dunks.

Monroe, who had 14 points in that win over Jacksonville, played 31 minutes.

"His instincts are great at both ends of the floor," Hoyas coach John Thompson III said. "You tell him something once, and he understands what you're saying and when to apply it and how to apply it."

Georgetown has long had a policy prohibiting first-term freshmen from speaking to the media. Monroe's coach and teammates were eager to speak for him.

"The kid is good. This is just the beginning," senior guard Jessie Sapp said. "He's been working hard. This is the result of working hard."

Drexel missed 15 of its first 18 field goal attempts, committed 11 first-half turnovers and trailed 38-15 with 2:23 to play before the break. The Dragons shot 24.5 percent from the field in their first game against Georgetown.

Drexel coach Bruiser Flint knew his team was outclassed against a Big East opponent and a player like Monroe.

"He's a guy who'll be a high draft pick. He's going to be a special player," Flint said. "Our big guys -- they did absolutely nothing."

The Hoyas ran off the first 11 points of the second half to take a 53-25 lead with 17:36 left.

Chris Wright added 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds for Georgetown, which shot 61.5 percent from the field in the first half.

The Hoyas play Wichita State in the Old Spice Classic on Thursday, and Thompson is eager to see how Monroe and the rest of his team play against better competition.

"It's the second game. He's got a long way to go," Thompson said. "We're going to have some hiccups here."

The Hoyas took their biggest lead, 65-34, when Freeman hit a 3-pointer with 13 minutes left.

Drexel, which beat Penn in its season opener on Tuesday, committed 17 turnovers and never got within 20 points in the game's final 18 minutes. Gerald Colds added 11 points for the Dragons, and Tramayne Hawthorne had 10.
