LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) -Charles Funches scored 15 points and Hampton held off Monmouth, N.J., 59-56 Sunday in the World Vision Basketball Challenge.
The game was tight throughout, with eight lead changes and seven ties.
Hampton's Vincent Simpson broke a 54-54 tie with a jump shot with 47 seconds left.
Then, trailing 57-55 with 13 seconds to go, Monmouth's Ed Waite made a free throw but missed the second. The Pirates' Kwame Morgan hit two foul shots with 10 seconds left to close the scoring.
Waite missed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left.
Waite and Whitney Coleman scored 17 points each for Monmouth (2-5), which led 29-27 at halftime. The Hawks went 1-2 in the tournament.
Simpson and Michael Freeman each scored 13 points for the Hawks (2-5), who finished 2-1 in the tournament.
