Prairie View A&M vs Baylor

Time: 08:00 P.M. EST
  •

Last season, Prairie View A&M coach Byron Rimm II compared Baylor's size up front to that of an NBA team. The Bears are about to get even bigger with 6-foot-11 forward Perry Jones III likely to return.

With Jones eligible to return from suspension, the seventh-ranked Bears will try to improve to 12-0 against Prairie View on Tuesday night.

The Panthers visited Baylor (5-0) last Nov. 29 and suffered a 90-45 loss. Jones scored 16 points and added a season-high 13 rebounds, while 6-7 Quincy Acy had 13 points and five boards.

Anthony Jones, 6-10, scored five points with five rebounds for the Bears.

Rimm said that he hadn't "even seen a team that big in the NBA," following the defeat, and his team will face a Baylor squad that has even more size thanks to 6-9 Quincy Miller. The freshman forward is averaging a team-high 15.2 points and 5.6 rebounds.

Adding Jones III to the frontcourt rotation of Miller, Acy, Anthony Jones and Cory Jefferson should make for a very difficult challenge for Prairie View's 7-foot center Mayol Riathin and 6-9 forward Jules Montgomery.

Jones III, the preseason Big 12 player of the year, has completed a six-game NCAA suspension for receiving improper benefits before arriving at Baylor. The sophomore averaged 13.9 points and 7.2 rebounds in 2010-11.

"I know I'm going to be excited because of the first game back, but I've just got to play smart and play like I know how to play," Jones said last week.

How coach Scott Drew is going to find time for Jones III is uncertain with Acy (11.4 ppg, 7.4 rpg) and Anthony Jones (12.4, 6.2) providing far more than just senior leadership, and Miller starring in his first collegiate season.

Miller has led the team in scoring four times and posted his first career double-double with 17 points and 11 boards in a 75-65 victory over Texas-Arlington on Wednesday. He also had a season-best six assists while going 11 of 12 from the foul line.

"He does such a good job at drawing contact, and when he gets to the free-throw line he is a good shooter, but he rebounded tonight," Drew said. "The other thing is he is a good passer and he had a six-to-three assist-to-turnover ratio. ... That just makes our team that much more dangerous, when you have someone who can do that. Hopefully that will continue."

The Panthers (2-5) are hoping to end their recent slide as they go for their first victory over a Division I team this season. Since opening with home wins over Schreiner and Arlington Baptist, Prairie View has shot 33.0 percent.

The Panthers made a season-low 15 field goals and went 1 of 11 from 3-point range in a 56-49 loss to Wofford in the consolation round of the Chicago Invitational Challenge on Saturday.

Junior guard Jourdan Demuynck led Prairie View with 10 points and was named to the all-tournament team. He's scoring a team-best 11.6 points per game.

Demuynck and the Panthers will have their hands full down low, but they will also have to keep an eye on Baylor sophomore guard Brady Heslip, who is shooting 46.9 percent (15 for 32) from beyond the arc. All but one of Heslip's field goals this season have been 3-pointers.

Baylor has taken the last four meetings by an average of 37.8 points. The Bears have won 25 consecutive non-conference home games.
