Virginia vs Duke

Time: 09:00 P.M. EST
  •

The series between Duke and Virginia has been extremely one-sided over the years, with the Blue Devils routinely beating the Cavaliers.

The gap between the two programs could be closing.

Facing Duke as a ranked team for the first time in a decade Thursday night, No. 16 Virginia looks to continue its surge and win a 13th straight game when it visits the eighth-ranked Blue Devils, who have made some changes to their starting lineup.

Since 2002-03, Duke is 16-1 against Virginia - its best record against any ACC team. The Blue Devils (13-2, 1-0) have won seven straight in the series by an average of 17.6 points and have reeled off 14 consecutive home victories over the Cavaliers since a double-overtime loss in 1995.

Although the Blue Devils have dominated the series, Virginia - unlike Duke - hasn't typically been an ACC contender, let alone a national power.

That could be changing.

The Cavaliers (14-1, 1-0) have won 12 in a row for the first time since a 15-game run in 1981-82, and are off to their best start since that team 30 years ago - led by Ralph Sampson - opened 27-1.

That's helped Virginia rise to its highest position in the AP Poll since it was No. 15 on Feb. 11, 2002. Two weeks before that, top-ranked Duke defeated the No. 7 Cavaliers 94-81, the last time Virginia faced the Blue Devils as a ranked team. Duke has been ranked No. 12 or better in all 18 meetings since.

The Blue Devils are once again highly ranked, but they don't appear to be firing on all cylinders.

After losing to Temple 78-73 on Jan. 4, Mike Krzyzewski shook up his starting lineup Saturday at Georgia Tech. Freshman Quinn Cook made his first career start at point guard instead of Tyler Thornton, and Miles Plumlee replaced Ryan Kelly.

The Blue Devils won 81-74 despite being outrebounded 38-26.

Freshman Austin Rivers, who is averaging a team-best 14.7 points, was held to eight on 3 of 10 shooting. Plumlee got in foul trouble and finished with seven points and three boards, while Kelly scored 21 off the bench.

Krzyzewski was pleased with Cook, who had 10 points and five assists, and how his team responded to the Yellow Jackets pulling within two with 3:44 remaining.

"There's a lot of stuff happening with our team, but I thought we really showed some toughness," Krzyzewski said. "To win a game down the stretch like that is very important for the development of our kids."

Like Duke, Virginia was also in a tight game Saturday, a 52-51 victory over Miami.

Sammy Zeglinski hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:42 to play, then kept the Hurricanes' Durand Scott from getting a shot off from in close as the buzzer sounded.

"I thought for us not to play our best and still find a way was very important," coach Tony Bennett said. "Now we play a very powerful team on the road in Duke. We'll take one at a time."

Mike Scott finished with 23 points and eight rebounds Saturday and earned his third ACC player of the week honor two days later. The 6-foot-8 forward, who averages team highs of 16.5 points and 8.9 rebounds, has been giving opponents trouble in the post, and is likely eager to face Duke after missing both meetings last season with an ankle injury.

The Cavaliers lost at Cameron Indoor Stadium 76-60 on Jan. 15 despite leading by six at halftime, then shot just 28.6 percent in a 56-41 home loss to the Blue Devils a month later.
