Texas Southern vs Colorado

Colorado is on the verge of matching its best start in 30 seasons and would appear to have a good chance of accomplishing that feat.

The 19th-ranked Buffaloes seek to improve to 6-0 on Tuesday night when they welcome struggling Texas Southern to Boulder.

Colorado last opened with six straight wins in 1989-90 and hasn't had a better start than that since beginning 7-0 in 1982-83. The Buffaloes got a little closer to both with their best offensive performance of the season Sunday, shooting 56.6 percent and making 7 of 13 from 3-point range in an 89-74 win over Air Force.

Freshman Josh Scott had 20 points - his best showing in five collegiate games - while Andre Roberson contributed a season-high 18 points and 13 rebounds, his first double-double of this campaign after posting 20 in 2011-12.

That win followed an 81-74 victory over Murray State in the championship game of the Charleston Classic on Nov. 18, in which the Buffaloes shot 53.2 percent. In its first three games, Colorado averaged 67.0 points on 44.8 percent shooting.

"We have weapons inside. We have weapons outside. We can score in transition. We can score in the half court," coach Tad Boyle said. "When we make plays for each other, we're pretty good.

"One of the things we have to do is get our assist-to-turnover ratio better. We had 11 assists and 15 turnovers (Sunday). When we have 15 turnovers I want to have 22, 23 assists."

Colorado will work on that against Texas Southern (1-5), which has dropped 21 straight non-conference road games and 84 of its last 86 such contests. The Tigers, though, nearly rallied from a 23-point deficit in Boulder last season before falling 56-51.

Spencer Dinwiddie had 18 points and a career-high five 3-pointers in that victory, and Roberson posted 11 points and 16 rebounds. Omar Strong scored 23 points for Texas Southern on 8-of-12 shooting, but is connecting at only a 26.9 percent clip this season and averaging 8.7 points after putting up a team-best 13.3 per game in 2011-12.

Junior guard Raymond Penn is the only Tigers player averaging double figures at 16.2 ppg, but he also struggled with his shooting in Saturday's 79-52 loss at Middle Tennessee, hitting 4 of 12 from the field and finishing with 10 points. Lawrence Johnson-Danner had a team-best 14 off the bench in Texas Southern's third straight defeat.

Johnson-Danner scored 19 points against Colorado during an NIT matchup March 16, 2011, but the Tigers lost 88-74 in Boulder. The Buffaloes' first matchup with Texas Southern was an 88-77 win Nov. 18, 2009.

Each of the Tigers' 13 games against Top 25 opponents over the past decade has been a loss by at least 16 points, and they fell 69-41 at then-No. 21 Michigan State on Nov. 18.

Colorado moved up four spots in this week's AP poll, but Boyle said his team isn't focused on its ranking.

"We don't talk about it," the coach said. "I'm not going to ignore it. It's a fact and I'm happy for our program. I'm happy for our fans. We have to understand how we got there and understand what we have to do to stay there and concentrate.

"We don't have to win every game, we just have to figure out what to do to win the next game."
