Indiana vs Penn State

Indiana guard Jordan Hulls can probably be expected to bounce back after enduring the worst shooting effort of his career.

The senior was prolific from 3-point range against Penn State in three victories last season, a pattern he'll hope to continue in Monday night's matchup with the Nittany Lions for the visiting and fifth-ranked Hoosiers.

Hulls missed all 10 shots, including four from long range Monday in a 69-65 win at Iowa. His previous worst shooting effort came when he was 0 for 7 two seasons ago in a 72-48 loss at Illinois.

"He was right back in the gym," coach Tom Crean said. "There were no real issues with that. He impacted the game. He's been fine. He has had a great week, and I wouldn't say he's shot it great."

There's a good chance Hulls - a 51.4 percent shooter on 3s this season - will shoot it great Monday. He averaged 20.7 points and made 13 of 22 3s against the Nittany Lions (8-5, 0-1) last season.

Indiana shot 53.4 percent from beyond the arc in those games.

"Last year, one of the things that they did was hit a lot of 3s on us," Penn State forward Ross Travis said. "I'm guessing we're going to be talking about that a lot."

The Nittany Lions are allowing opponents to shoot 35.0 percent on 3s for one of the conference's worst marks.

Penn State guard Tim Frazier averaged 22.7 points last season against Indiana, but he is out for the rest of 2012-13 with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

"They miss Tim Frazier, but every game they are that much more comfortable with one another, and you can see that," Crean insisted.

Indiana (13-1, 1-0) survived season-low 40.0 percent shooting to beat the Hawkeyes in its first true road game. Cody Zeller had 19 points and 10 boards and Victor Oladipo added his first double-double with 14 and 10.

Oladipo leads the Big Ten in field-goal percentage at 67.3. The junior is averaging 13.6 points, but totaled 19 on 5-of-18 shooting last season versus Penn State.

Zeller averaged 15.7 points on 68.2 percent shooting in 2011-12 against the Nittany Lions, who tried to limit his touches but could not successfully defend the Hoosier's perimeter shooters.

"They're an offensive powerhouse, they can score in so many different ways," Penn State coach Pat Chambers said. "They have four guys in double figures, they have a great bench, great coach, a lottery pick in a big man, good guards, good 3-point shooters."

With Frazier unavailable, Southern Mississippi transfer D.J. Newbill is averaging a team-high 15.5 points and Jermaine Marshall 14.9. Those two combined for 31 points in Thursday's 60-51 defeat at Wisconsin.

"Marshall and Newbill are handling the ball," Crean said. "They are taking most of their shots. Their teammates feed off of them."

The Nittany Lions are shooting a Big Ten-worst 41.2 percent and averaging 64.3 points for one of the conference's worst marks.

Penn State is 7-1 at home with five straight wins.

Chambers' first victory as a head coach came over Indiana on Nov. 20, 2009, when he was with Boston University.
