PHILADELPHIA (AP) Ian Young sank the winning 3-pointer for Auburn with 12 seconds left - one of a team-record 18 3s - to lead the Tigers to an 80-78 win over Temple on Friday night.
Young finished with 28 points, Toney Douglas had 15 and Quinnel Brown added 11 for the Tigers, who made quite an impression for coach Jeff Lebo, hired away from Chattanooga last spring. Using crisp, smart passing around the perimeter and taking open shots against Temple's matchup zone, Auburn nearly broke the team record of 15 3-pointers in the first half.
The Tigers had 14 in the first half, turning a 21-5 deficit into a 26-all game after seven straight 3-pointers. Young had four in the first half and Nathan Watson added three 3-pointers.
Auburn made 18 of 41 3-pointers - 14-for-25 in the first half.
Auburn sank 15 3-pointers against West Florida in 1994 and against Arkansas in 1996.
Dustin Salisbery and Mark Tyndale led Temple with 19 points, and Mardy Collins added 13 points and nine assists.
Brown tied the record on Auburn's second possession of the second half and Young set the record with a shot from the top of the arc midway through the half for a 63-53 lead.
Temple coach John Chaney abandoned his traditional zone for some man-to-man defense. The Owls hit a couple of 3s and went on a 16-6 run to tie the game 69-69. Tyndale had a nice block, then raced down the court to finish off Temple's game-tying possession with a layup.
Temple went ahead 78-77 on Tyndale's 3-pointer from the left corner, but left too much time for Young. Young raced down and sank an uncontested 3-pointer - his sixth of the game.
Temple lost control of the ball on its last possession, regained it on a jump ball, but couldn't get off a shot.
Young made six 3-pointers and Douglas and Watson each sank three.
