BOSTON (AP) Jared Dudley scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half on Friday night as Boston College pulled away for a 72-58 win over Maine in the season opener for both schools.

The Eagles played without last year's leading scorer, Craig Smith, who was out sick, and Jermaine Watson, who was suspended for violating team rules.

Sean Marshall scored 17 points for the Eagles and Louis Hinnant added 10. Dudley also had seven rebounds.

Ernest Turner led Maine with 18 points and Kevin Reed had 11. The Black Bears stayed close for most of the game by hitting 10-of-22 on 3-point attempts.

BC trailed 45-42 before taking the lead for good with an 11-0 run over a 5:05 span midway through the second half. Dudley had a pair of baskets in the run.

The Black Bears closed the gap to two twice in the final 6:08, the last time at 55-53 on Reed's basket with 5:08 to play. But the Eagles then scored 11 of the next 13 points to put the game away, grabbing a 66-55 lead on Marshall's 3-pointer with 1:18 to play.

The Eagles led 35-34 at the half.

The schools are intense hockey rivals, and the Eagles now have 13-3 edge in the basketball series.
